Tosca

Opera Zurich

21st October 2017

Tosca has always been a classic role for world-famous singers. Celebrated soprano Anja Harteros, still fondly remembered for her acclaimed Zurich performance in Verdi’s Don Carlo, will be taking on this role in our revival of Giacomo Puccini’s eponymous opera. At her side is the American tenor Brian Jagde, who has already celebrated great successes as Cavaradossi in Berlin and Chicago and will now give his début at Zurich Opera House.
The story of the celebrated singer Floria Tosca is one of the most macabre ever to have been portrayed on the operatic stage. The painter Cavaradossi is suspected of having helped a political prisoner to escape. In order to find out where he is hiding, the Roman Chief of Police Scarpia gains control of Cavaradossi and his lover Tosca, whom he strongly desires. A terrible night begins – which none of them will survive. With the heroine, Puccini created the portrait of a diva who has devoted her life to the stage, body and soul. Tosca makes no distinction between her existence on the stage and real life. Fascinated by this figure, director Robert Carsen sparks an enigmatic exploration of appearance and reality, theatre and the real world, while fully meeting the demands of the emotionally charged plot. more information
